The animated film came out this week and there is much to like about this. First off, mainstay Kevin Conroy is once again the voice of Batman and the pseudo-anime' style surprisingly works very well. The interconnected stories fit into the BATMAN BEGINS continuity. The only bad part is the opening sequence where a bunch of kids talk about meeting Batman, something we already in a similar fashion, saw in an episode of Batman: The Animated . Highly recommended!

the truth behind what happened in 52-- the story of what bruce went through in the cave in isolation. . . what happened?

It's revealed in 665 but I dont trust Morrison, I know he had a direct hand in this as he writes both Batman and 52 but I dislike the direction he's going in.

Anyone else feel the same way or am I alone?

I think Bats is better left alone and not broken down. Morrison is going into the Joe Cool shit and that is ridiculous. . . or maybe I'm wrong. . . . .

D.C.U. has gotten so clean that Bats should just find his place and stay== stop sending him into space and elsewhere he belongs in gotham. If JLA needs Tactical info, course of action etc. that's one thing but c'mon. He's my fav character but dont stretch it . . . I love and hate Grant Morrison's run.

I posted this on another tribe but did it here too because I don't know which is more active-- I just wanna talk comics especially D.C.

D.C. will always sucker me in with their events-- even 'Zero Hour' was alright by me. The one-day event 'World War Three' that spanned 5 books was a bummer. I understand that it was to act as a quick 'fill in the blanks' to explain oneYearLater changes (Aquaman, Nightwing and so on) but it left me feeling suckered and insulted.

does anyone else think D.C. is heading into some major backlash? --They've got Richard Donner working on Action Comics with Geoff Johns who just happened into comics while working with the old man, suddenly he's got the keys to the castle and full-on Dan Jurgens treatment (I love the guy, especially Green Lantern but do we need a Booster Gold ongoing?)
Brad Metzler on JLA has put together the best first run of any 'flagship' title I can remember (albeit one which must be read at once to appreciate)
52 was so shockingly successful that they're continuing down the weekly road with no break between titles (52 to Countdown) and they are raising the price fifty-cents.
52 also had Greg Rucka and Grant Morrison 'Working Together' which confounds me but it worked out well.

I could go on but my point is that I feel D.C. has raised the bar for comics and done much in the past 2 years to constantly raise it-- but by the end of 'Countdown' how many titles will we be flooded with? How many more events that "Change everything forever until everything changes forever again" Will they be able to maintain the level of quality when spreading out so thin? Dan Didio says that over the next year all DCU books will be in real time; or at least in the same timeline (maybe possible if you kill Nightwing?)

Maybe D.C. in all of its looking ahead should consider that the bigshot writers from television, the N.Y.Times Bestseller list and movies may tire of this fad and leave them with
countless dangling plots and bad ideas that seemed like good ones coming from an ex-writer for the O.C. or Sex in the City-- whichever in hell it was.
When the next big event is forced upon us to fix continuity or just to retcon for a new writer's ideas I hope they look to the guy in line at the convention who lives and breathes this stuff or to Gail fuckin' Simone who generally kicks ass.

Bob Kane (ne Robert Kahn, October 24, 1915 – November 3, 1998) was an American comic book artist and writer credited as the creator of Batman.

Early life and career

Robert Kahn legally changed his name to Bob Kane at age 18. He entered comics in 1936, and for Detective Comics Inc. — one of the companies that, with National Periodicals and All-American Publications, merged to form the eventual DC Comics — created a character called The Bat-Man. Kane said his influences for the character included actor Douglas Fairbanks' movie portrayal of the swashbuckler Zorro, and author Mary Rinehart's mysterious villain The Bat.

Batman

His collaborator and studio writer, Bill Finger, recalled that Kane

had an idea for a character called 'Batman', and he'd like me to see the drawings. I went over to Kane's, and he had drawn a character who looked very much like Superman with kind of ... reddish tights, I believe, with boots ... no gloves, no gauntlets ... with a small domino mask, swinging on a rope. He had two stiff wings that were sticking out, looking like bat wings. And under it was a big sign ... BATMAN.[1]

Finger said he offered such suggestions as giving the character a cowl, and a scalloped cape instead of wings; adding gloves; and removing the bright red sections of the original costume, suggesting instead a gray-and-black color scheme. Finger additionally said his suggestions were influenced by Lee Falk's extremely popular The Phantom, a syndicated newspaper comic strip character with which Kane was familiar as well; the suggestions included leaving the mask's eyeholes blank to connote mystery. Finger wrote the first Batman story, while Kane provided art. Because Kane had already submitted the proposal for Batman to his editors at DC Comics, he is the only person given official credit for the creation of Batman.

The character was a breakout hit and editors suggested that the character receive a youthful sidekick whom the readers could use as an audience surrogate. Kane, partly inspired by the Junior character from the Dick Tracy comic strip, initially suggested an impish character named Mercury, while Finger suggested a more down-to-earth character. The name "Robin" was suggested by Jerry Robinson (Kane's inker) after the then-popular Errol Flynn movie The Adventures of Robin Hood. Robinson also introduced Batman's archenemy the Joker, in Batman #1.

When DC wanted more product than Kane's studio could deliver, the company assigned Dick Sprang and other in-house pencilers as ghost artists, drawing uncredited under Kane's supervision. Kane himself, unknown to DC, used Sheldon Moldoff from 1953-1967, as well as his predecessor,Lew S. Schwartz(1946-1953)

Later life and career

As Kane's comic work tapered off in the 1960s, Kane parlayed his Batman status into minor celebrity. He enjoyed a post-comic book career as a painter, showing his work in art galleries, although even some of these paintings were produced by ghost artists. In 1989, he published his autobiography, Batman and Me, with a second volume Batman and Me, The Saga Continues in 1996.

He was set to have a cameo in the 1989 movie Batman as the newspaper artist who prepares the drawing of the "Bat-man" for Alexander Knox, but scheduling conflicts prevented this. Kane's trademark square signature can still be seen clearly on the drawing.

Kane is interred in Forest Lawn Memorial Park (Hollywood Hills) in Los Angeles, California.
RYAN PHILLIPPE is set to take over from TOMMY LEE JONES after reportedly landing the role of HARVEY DENT/TWO-FACE in the upcoming BATMAN BEGINS sequel. REESE WITHERSPOON's husband will join HEATH LEDGER, who has signed on to play THE JOKER, and new Batman CHRISTIAN BALE in THE DARK KNIGHT. CRASH star Phillippe beat LIEV SHREIBER and JOSH LUCAS to the role of the scheming district attorney, played by Jones in 1995 movie BATMAN FOREVER, according to internet reports. SIR MICHAEL CAINE and MORGAN FREEMAN have also joined the Batman cast, while fellow Oscar winner PHILIP SEYMOUR HOFFMAN is in talks to play THE PENGUIN in the new film.

MEGHAN DAUM
Behind Batwoman's Gayness
Today's women are pigeonholed as either girly girls or lesbians.
Meghan Daum

July 15, 2006

GUARD YOUR daughters closely. On Wednesday, Batwoman will come out as a lesbian. No, it's not as big a deal as if, say, Strawberry Shortcake were appearing on the cover of Out. Most people — myself included — don't really know who Batwoman is. But the media have been all over this for months, and I'd be remiss if I didn't jump on the bandwagon (make that the Subaru station wagon; I used to own one, so I'm allowed to say this).

Batwoman is turning up in a DC Comics' series called "52," which launched in May. Among the characters is Kathy Kane, a buxom, red-haired socialite with romantic ties to a female ex-cop. On Wednesday, when the much-anticipated (or at least much-hyped by DC Comics) issue of "52" is released, we will learn that Kane is really Batwoman.

I don't know if the new Batwoman will be bulletproof, elastic or able to fly, but if Kane's manicured appearance is any indication, I don't think she'll be using power tools or even playing acoustic guitar. So unless there's an abrupt character change, it looks like DC will steer clear of the stereotypes I've invoked in the preceding paragraphs.

The other day, I visited my local comic book store to inquire about the cultural significance of Batwoman's coming out. That should give you an idea of just how committed I am to this column. If there's anything more intimidating than the kind of used-record store that only seems to sell Radiohead albums, it's a comic book store. You can multiply that by 20 if you walk in wearing a peasant blouse and flip flops, using words like "signifier" and trying to act all informed by mentioning that Batwoman hasn't been around since 1979, when she was killed by a bronze tiger (I swore I'd read that in one of the news articles).

Suffice it to say that I was upbraided by the clerk, who told me that a) superheroes rarely die but are instead transported to other realms (or something like that), and b) there are lots of gay comic book characters and the fixation on Batwoman was just another example of the media exploiting a topic it knows nothing about. We then proceeded to have a conversation about "Commissioner Barbara Gordon," and it took me several minutes to realize he was talking about a comic book character and not an actual politician.

So, yes, I'm a dope when it comes to comics (also apparently about city government). But I'm not a dope about that 51% of the population known as women, many of whom seem to be undergoing a sexual identity crisis without even knowing it. Maybe baby-doll dresses, chick lit and the Olsen twins have infiltrated our consciousness to the point of oblivion. Whatever the reason, it appears that there are only two ways to go about being female these days: You are either a midriff-bearing, gum-snapping, engagement ring-chasing girly girl or you are a probable lesbian.

We used to think of this dichotomy in terms of "separating the women from the girls." Perhaps you remember how this went. Teenagers and early twentysomethings wore nameplate necklaces and waited for the phone to ring, and adult women owned condos and knew how to unclog a toilet without losing their sex appeal.

But in a culture that's as allergic to subtlety as it is obsessed with youth, acceptable versions of womanhood seem to be melting away with the polar ice cap. You either get the Botox, the boob job, the bikini wax and baby doll dresses, or you take the radical step of looking and acting like a fully formed, grown-up female.

Once upon a time, these fully formed creatures were called "real women." Now they're called lesbians. This is especially true in cases in which the women in question are not known to actually be lesbians. What do Hillary Rodham Clinton, Condoleezza Rice, Christiane Amanpour, Oprah Winfrey and Martha Stewart have in common? It's not that they're accomplished, independent, talented, ambitious or rich, it's that they're all secretly gay! Ask anyone who reads Internet blogs.

I'm allowed to say this because I'm secretly gay too. Or at least I try to be. What choice do I have? Apparently "lesbian" is now the de facto label for any woman who asserts her own tastes and opinions and does not necessarily need to get married tomorrow. Granted, this might be confusing for people who lack opinions and their own tastes, and are desperate to settle down, but happen to be actual lesbians. But, according to the current cultural mind-set, a heterosexual woman who has her act together simply does not exist in nature.

Is it any wonder, then, that we (at least we in the media, who have high rates of secret lesbianism) are so fascinated by Batwoman's newest incarnation? DC Comics might be touting the idea of diversity, but I suspect what we're really seeing is an antidote to the rampant girliness of our era presented — how's this for ironic? — in the safest way possible.

If there's anything scarier than a strong lesbian, it's a strong straight woman. Now there's a superhero we could use.

Pow! It’s a Brush With Batman
Or is it Batman with a brush? No matter — art by Adam West and fans is on display.
By Barbara E. Hernandez
Special to The Times

July 13, 2006

Adam WEST said he made a decision 20 years ago to make peace with his signature role as Batman.

"There was a time when I had to deal with a terrible stigma because nobody could imagine the actor who created Batman could do anything else," West said. "In the last 20 or so years I've made a beneficial agreement with the role of Batman, and that is to enjoy it and the response it gets."

So when this year marked the 40th anniversary of the 1966-68 TV series, West decided to exhibit drawings and paintings he created as an impression of that time. The show is called "Beyond Batman," at the M Modern Gallery in Palm Springs, and it is accompanied by a tribute exhibit, "Gotham," that includes more than 40 contemporary artists presenting their interpretation of "Batman." Both are showing through July 23.

West's show features 52 sketches and paintings depicting characters such as the Joker, played by Cesar Romero, and Catwoman, played by Julie Newmar.

"I had been working on a series of pictures to kind of give my expression to the anniversary," West said from his home in Ketchum, Idaho. (He also lives part-time in Palm Springs.)

The actor added that his artwork is either loved or hated by audiences. "I don't paint butter dishes, doilies or hummingbirds in my garden. It's more raw, I suppose. But it always creates a reaction," West said.

Jay Nailor, owner of M Modern Gallery, curated the exhibitions.

Nailor's gallery specializes in an emerging genre known as lowbrow art, or pop surrealism. Lowbrow is a form of artwork inspired by Los Angeles pop culture and is becoming a beloved staple of Generation X members who enjoy its nostalgia and kitschy cool. Artists such as Camille Rose Garcia, Mark Ryden and Shag dominate the genre with religious, cartoon, surf and tiki influences.

"We knew the tribute show would be a good way for animators and illustrators to take part," Nailor said. "I'm also a big fan of the 1960s 'Batman' series."

Nailor's artists in "Gotham" proved to be fans of the series too. Amanda Visell, a 28-year-old artist and freelance illustrator in South Pasadena, said she wanted to be part of the exhibition immediately.

"I used to collect 1960s Batman comic books when I was little," she said. "And I knew I really wanted to play with the suits."

Her painting "Double Identity" features a smiling Bruce Wayne, Batman's alter ego, sipping a cup of tea and being attended to by his manservant, Alfred, while the other half of his image is a frowning Batman with Robin hanging by nearly a thread to his Batapult.

"I think he's frowning because he's at work and he has to be serious," she said, adding that Batman and Robin always had a tense relationship anyway. "And the one where he's smiling, he's being served by Alfred.... I think most people are happy when they're being served."

Ryan Heshka, a 35-year-old artist and illustrator from Vancouver, B.C., also said he had a plethora of old Batman comics. "I've been drawing Batman all my life," he added.

For the show, Heshka painted "Batman," a riff on his favorite cover from a 1940 comic book. (Batman made his first appearance in Detective Comics in 1939.) His painting shows a tied-up Robin being held captive by a mad scientist armed with a syringe, and Batman breaking in to save the day.

"I updated the image with the Adam West version and threw in Robin for good measure," he said. "I get feedback from people who recognize the actual image.... It's very recognizable for people who collect Batman comic books."

Batman fans are die-hards. Despite 110-degree heat outside, the M Modern Gallery was packed by hundreds who came to meet West and guest-star favorite Newmar at the show's reception last month.

West said he's happy so many have come to see the exhibitions and enjoy the Batman legacy.

"Not many people get a chance to create a role that has that kind of place or position in our pop culture," West said. "Batman seems to go on forever." *
Detective Comics 817. While Batman was talking to Gordon. The way Batman was watching/looking at Robin seemed like he was waiting for Robin to go around the bin or breakdown. Then of course Robin mentioning to Ofc Harper that he wasnt sure how it was to be back yet was ominous.

Batman is acting like he just visited with the Dali Lama. Robin, aside from the tumultuos happenings in Titans and his book is so. . . comfortable with Batman. I know that they've spent a year away together training to be a Dynamic Duo to rival Bruce and Dick but I'm a little nervous about the attitude changes--especially Batman. I hope it's not an excuse to have an event which will make Batman go-dark again.

In Detective #818 an observer(who I wont name though it's obvious) comments on Batman and Robin: "But look now. Batman and this third Robin...how they fight. Perfectly meshed."

and Bats is so warm and fatherly with tim now. After reading Inf.Crisis6 and realizing how the big 3 are stepping back and saying "my god what have we become" I guess it should be easy to accept a Batman who's returned from a year long absence seeming to be at peace with himself....... just hard to get used to, as all of New-Earth is going to be (Don't even get me started on Aquaman 1yl)

Like the tough gal persona they have Canary in. The revenge mode Huntress in the beginning. The fact that Huntress was kicked out of the League just like in the comics.

Canary getting pissed off about her bike getting trashed.

Huntress dragging the The Question off at the end for some fun, as she would in the comics.

My only gripe is the continued "relationship" they are having with Canary and Green Arrow. I know they were together for a long time. And briefly together after he came back from the dead. But shes broken it off in the books thank GOD. (though at the end of the last BOP issue she is calling G.A. for a talk and I dont like the sound of that) The more she is with G.A. the more it seems that she is viewed as a side kick or just a girlfriend as opposed to a stand alone character and thats just my personal beef and i feel the need to vent so i am going to shut up now.

Without whom non of the guys and gals in tights in this tribe would be here.

Bob Kane (October 24, 1915 – November 3, 1998) was the co-creator of Batman, although many sources credit Kane as the sole creator of the character.
He was born Robert Kahn but legally changed his name to the familiar "Kane" at age 18. An eager young artist, Kane came to the burgeoning comics world in 1936 with his own book that led to various assignments in the following years. Following the success of Superman in Action Comics, editors at National Publications (now DC Comics) requested more superheroes comics. In response, Kane created a character called "Birdman". His collaborator Bill Finger offered such suggestions as renaming the character "Batman", giving the character a cowl instead of a simple domino mask, giving him a cape instead of wings, giving him gloves, and removing bright red sections of the original costume. Finger wrote the first Batman story, while Kane provided art. Because Kane had already submitted the proposal for a Batman character to his editors at DC Comics, Kane was the only person given official credit at the time for the creation of Batman.
The character was a breakout hit, but National sought to improve sales even further. Editors suggested that the character receive a youthful sidekick who the readers could use as an audience surrogate. Kane initially suggested an impish character like Puck, while Finger suggested a more down-to-earth character, Robin.
Kane, the more business-savvy of the Kane-Finger creative team, negotiated a contract with National, signing away any ownership that he might have in the character in exchange for, among other compensations, a mandatory byline on all Batman comics stating "Batman created by Bob Kane", regardless of whether he was involved in the specific issue. Bill Finger's contract, by comparison, left him with a monetary pittance and no credit even on the stories that he wrote without Kane.
Kane's major contributions to Batman were in the 1940s, with several "ghost pencilers" assisting him (like Jerry Robinson, who co-created the "Joker" while working under Kane's name). As his comic work tapered off later in his career, Kane parlayed his official status as sole creator of Batman into a low level of celebrity. He enjoyed a post-comic book career as a painter, showing his work in art galleries. Even some of these paintings were produced by other, uncredited artists, now ghost-painting under Kane's name. Kane died in 1998 and was interred in Forest Lawn - Hollywood Hills Cemetery in Los Angeles.

Trivia
Kane also created the television cartoon characters Courageous Cat, Minute Mouse and Cool McCool.

Created the comic superhero Batman in May 1939.

He created Batman from a combination of Zorro (a wealthy playboy/masked hero), the Shadow (a dark superhero), and Dracula (a bat-like creature).

The name 'Bruce Wayne' is derived from Scottish history's Robert the Bruce and Revolutionary War General "Mad" Anthony Wayne.

Stated in "Cinescape" magazine that of all the actors who played Batman, he felt that Val Kilmer did it the best.

His famous comic book character 'Batman' made his debut in Detective Comics # 27 in May 1939. It is now a collector's classic and a near mint comic book can fetch upto $ 350,000 (in 2003).

Personally recommended Jack Nicholson for the role of the Joker in the original Batman (1989).

In 1939 he was a freelance artist with a small studio of artists to assist/ghost pencil his work. Among these young comic creators was the writer of the group, Bill Finger. They were hired by Kane, not National and all work to come out of the studio was credited to Bob Kane. When National Comics (eventually DC Comics) editor Vin Sullivan asked him to create the next "Superman", he created a hero called "Birdman". Birdman wore a red outfit with domino mask and wings. It was the suggestion of Finger to make him a "Batman" and to make his costume dark, with a bat cowl and cape. He wrote the first Batman comic and many more. Without Bill Finger there would be no Batman. Yet he died poor and uncredited. Years later Kane expressed regret over this, yet he never allowed Finger to be credited as a co-creator.

Gave Adam West, who portrayed Batman on the 1960s TV series, a drawing of Batman with the inscription "To my buddy Adam, who breathed life into my pen and ink creation."

When signing a print of Batman and Robin in flight for an old friend, signed it "Bats Wishes Always".

PASADENA, Calif. (AP) — Stately Wayne Manor is no longer.
(Note: The "Wayne Manor" mansion seen in the "Batman" TV series was located in Pasadena. This false report puts the series taping at 160 S. San Rafael Avenue, the home that was burned and the same impressive home where scenes from movies have been shot. But the "Batman" TV series was actually shot farther down the street, at 380 S. San Rafael. That mansion was purchased in 2005 by Paul McCartney.)
A Wednesday night fire gutted a Tudor style mansion that served as the home of Bruce Wayne, aka Batman, in the 1960's Batman television series, said Lisa Derderian, a spokeswoman for the Pasadena Fire Department. It was being remodeled by the owners, she said.
"It was a fully engulfed inferno, for lack of a better term," Derderian said. TV footage showed flames leaping high into the night sky.
Sixty to 70 firefighters worked hard to prevent embers from igniting brush behind the home, which is in the city's Arroyo district, Derderian said. A police helicopter hovered above the site to search for flare-ups, she said.
"There's a very large brush area behind that residence," Derderian said. "It had the potential to turn into a very volatile event if any wind conditions were prevalent."
Fire crews from Pasadena, Burbank, Glendale and the city and county of Los Angeles were on scene, she said.
The home on South San Rafael Avenue was 16,000 square feet and sat on 5 acres of land, according to an article this week in the Los Angeles Times.
The home also was used for filming other TV shows and films including Dead Again (1991), which starred Emma Thompson and Kenneth Branagh, according to the Pasadena city website.
Several years ago, the house was the showcase for the city's annual upscale home tour, Derderian said.

GAY BATMAN" ARTIST GETS "CEASE & DESIST"
D.C. Comics has hit a Chelsea art dealer with a "cease & desist" letter for exhibiting Mark Chamberlain’s watercolors on a "gay Batman" theme. The works, which were exhibited at Kathleen Cullen Fine Art this spring (where they found ready buyers at prices starting at $200), include images of Batman and Robin exchanging a kiss, a watercolor titled Robin’s Baby Pictures depicting the Boy Wonder’s cute rear end, and a rendering of the Caped Crusader, sans shirt but otherwise in costume, striking a languorous pose. "D.C. Comics wants me to hand over all unsold work and invoices for the sold work," exclaimed dealer Kathleen Cullen (the gallery was formerly named Artek Contemporaries). "I’ve spent the last two weeks of my life consulting lawyers!" (Some works are also posted on Artnet, which has received a similar letter.)

The use by fine artists of mass-market and commercial cartoon imagery goes back decades -- both Robert Rauschenberg and Andy Warhol were pursued by photographers for copyright violations (the artists tended to settle), and Jeff Koons famously litigated the String of Puppies case all the way to the Supreme Court (he lost). The Walt Disney Co. brought an infringement suit against Dennis Oppenheim for using small statuettes of Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck in his sculpture Virus, with mixed results -- the artist was forbidden to sell the work but allowed to exhibit it. Karen Finley’s 1999 book, Pooh Unplugged, a rather scatological version of the children’s classic, forestalled a similar lawsuit by labeling the publication "a parody" on its cover. The issue is a hot one -- more recently, artists including Tom Sachs and Damien Loeb have been touched by copyright (and trademark) disputes. Stay tuned.

And the JSA encompasses so many heroes. Orginally in Gotham. The Sentinel the Hawks, Jay Garrick, Power Girl (a tribe favorite i do believe)

So expanding our base i think is a good thing.

Right? Since most of these have been people/characters we have discussed or eluded to anyway.

But its still focused enough that its may as well be just the comicbook.tribe etc.

Ok I am babbling now.

Adding all these characters to the keywords in description.
Thoughts faithfull readers?

How many of you have read Batgirl year one?

I thought the retelling of Bab's orgin as gothams *orginal* Batgirl
was great.

Do you think DC should do a year 2? picking up when she now a congresswoman?

I for one, would love it?

IMO, I feel Birds of prey is the best written comicbook out there.
Gail Simone, really does have a great take on all three characters.
